People ask me all the time, “What should I eat before a Spartan Race?”

The answer is never really simple.

A google search best foods to eat before a Spartan Race reveals the following…

The first website says eat within two hours. The bottom result in this screen shot says about four hours.

So which is it? Two hours? Four? What do you eat?

The answer is….not clear. It really depends on you and your body. If you have been seriously training for this race then you should know what foods fuel you properly. Eating an omelette and pancakes an hour before the race might not be a good idea. I can't tell you how many people I've seen barfing a mile into the race.

I personally have eaten a gas station turkey rueben 2 hours before a Super and had one of my best races. The PA Sprint in July I ate 2 pieces of pizza 45 minutes before the race and did phenomenal. Remember, you are going to burn anywhere between 500 to 1,000 calories in a Spartan race. Maybe more. When it comes to time to eat before a race, my suggestion is no less than 90 minutes out.

Want to know what to eat before a Spartan Race? Experiment with food, training and your body. Find what works for you. The internet can provide so much information that you become overloaded. One website says this, the other that. Over the past several years training for me has become an ongoing experiment. It is a constant journey, with no end in sight. But, that is a good thing. I have found that some things provide me with tremendous results, others not so much. That is the beauty of it.

Don't be afraid to experiment!! Good Luck in your Spartan adventures!
